A university in Southwest China's Yunnan Province has demanded its freshmen and sophomore students to run 120 kilometers a semester and learn how to swim as part of sports requirements.
位于该省省会昆明市的云南财经大学,于9月1日举行了开学典礼,体育部主任朱海营宣布了这些对4000余名大一学生的新要求。
The Yunnan University of Finance and Economic in the provincial capital Kunming held its opening ceremony on Sept. 1 when Sports Director Zhu Haiying announced the new requirements to over 4,000 first-year students.

为了满足该要求,学生们需要在上午6:30至7:30之间跑步,每个学期至少跑30次,跑满30千米。否则,学生们将会挂科,并且必须重修。
To satisfy the requirement, students need to run 30 kilometers between 6.30 am to 7.30 am at least 30 times in a semester. Otherwise students will fail in the course and must retake it.
朱海营表示,其目的是为了增强学生们的健康意识。
Zhu said the purpose is to enhance awareness of health among students.
他还指出,中国青少年的体质已经连续30年在下降了,各大学需要通过有效的措施解决这一问题。
He also said physical fitness among Chinese adolescents has declined for 30 years in a row and universities need to address the issue through effective measures.
学生们还被要求学会游泳,否则他们就会挂科重修课程。
Students are also required to learn to swim, or retake the course if they do not pass.
朱说道:“我们想要学生们通过一系列活动进行锻炼,并养成一种习惯。”
"We want to have students exercise through a series of activities and make working out a habit," said Zhu.
