The Chinese Communist Party has expelled from its ranks a former Agricultural Bank of China Ltd. executive, in a case that has had China's media and netizens abuzz with speculation since the bank first flagged that the executive was cooperating with an official investigation a year ago.

AgBank, however, has provided frustratingly little detail in one of the most high profile cases of alleged corruption at Chinese banks in recent years. It last commented on Yang Kun, the expelled official, when the former executive director and a vice president at the bank resigned in July, 'for personal reasons'. In May, China's third largest bank by assets said that Mr. Yang was 'assisting' authorities in their investigations.

The Ministry of Supervision of the People Republic of China said on its website Monday that an investigation found that Mr. Yang had used his position to benefit certain unnamed third parties in return from 'huge bribes.' In its statement, the disciplinary agency said that Mr. Yang had been expelled from the Communist Party and removed from all public office. 'Yang Kun's behavior constitutes a serious discipline violation, ' it said.

The Ministry didn't given any further details, but the allegations raise the question of whether Mr. Yang acted against the interests of the bank and its investors while carrying out his job.
